Icy conditions expected for Saturday evening
Areas throughout Butler County are likely see see a wintry mix Saturday afternoon, which could change to freezing rain as the temperatures drop in the evening.
Andrew Kienzle, a meteorologist with National Weather Service Pittsburgh, said precipitation is expected to encroach into the Butler area around 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. Around 7 p.m., that precipitation could turn to freezing rain, which could accumulate on roads throughout the area causing hazardous conditions for travelers.
Kienzle said people should avoid travel this evening, if possible.
“Those roads are expected to be icy and dangerous,” Kienzle said. “Once we get through evening, it's going to taper off between 10 to midnight. There could be flurries moving through as we move to sunrise on Sunday.”
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation also said Saturday afternoon that motorists should avoid travel this weekend when possible.
Kienzle said some of the hazardous conditions on the roads could dissipate Sunday, but the day is not expected to be much warmer than Saturday.
“Looks like we have high temps of around 33 degrees,” he said. “It certainly has a chance to freeze overnight. People traveling Sunday morning could potentially be hazardous.”
