<B>SCHOLARSHIP FUND</B> — Todd Glen, left, of G.O. Hawbaker presents a $10,000 check to James Bird, director of development at George Junior Republic, for its scholarship fund. Each year, G.O. Hawbaker hosts a charity golf tournament and the late Ted Ferren of G.O. Hawbaker was instrumental in placing George Junior on the list of awardees. The company has donated near $30,000 to the GJR Scholarship fund. Last year, GJR was able to award more than $100,000 to graduating seniors and alumni for college, vocational and technical education. GJR is a residential program for court adjudicated youths in Pine Township, Mercer County.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock Parks and Recreation will conduct an introduction to Photoshop class from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 22.

The class, sponsored by the New Castle Camera Club, will teach basic principles to correct flaws in digital images. The cost is $25 for those living in the Slippery Rock School District and $30 for nondistrict residents.

Grove City Winter Wine Walk slated for Feb. 23GROVE CITY — The third annual Winter Wine Walk, sponsored by Olde Town Grove City, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 23.Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at the Olde Town Grove City office at 120 S. Broad St., inside Steigerwald’s Kitchen and Bath.Olde Town merchants also are selling tickets and include Beans on Broad, Static Styling Salon, Nancy’s Hair Loft, B’gifted Extraordinary Gifts, Deer Creek Winery, Burdick’s Men’s Clothing, Mary Ann’s Classy Lady Consignment, Natural Options and Nonni’s Corner Trattoria.Tickets include wine and cuisine samples, a commemorative wine glass, as well as access to special promotions at Olde Town shops.During the event, ticket holders can meander down Olde Town’s sidewalks and sample regional wine and cuisine. A wine check station also will be available, allowing guests to pick up their purchased wine at the end of the walk.

SR students compete in Academic GamesSLIPPERY ROCK — On Jan. 17, students from Slippery Rock School District competed in the Academic Games at Slippery Rock University.Sierra Nagy, a fifth-grade student from Moraine Elementary School and first-time participant in the Academic Games, placed in the top 10 percent of competitors.Madeline McCleary’s team placed third overall for the day. Madeline is an eighth-grade student at Slippery Rock Middle School.These girls have earned a spot for the Tri-Bowl Tournament at Geneva College on March 6 and 7.Ava Marini, a sixth grader at Slippery Rock Middle School, placed second on a team in the world events category. Ava also is a first time participant and will be traveling to Geneva College for the tournament.
