Mike Lange dead at 76
Legendary Pittsburgh Penguins announcer Mike Lange reportedly died at the age of 76 Wednesday night, Feb. 19.
The former TV and radio play-by-play hockey announcer worked for the Penguins organization from 1974 to 2021.
Reports from various journalists out of Pittsburgh broke around 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
Lange, beloved by sports fans around western Pennsylvania, was known for his iconic goal calls and high-energy play-by-play.
From eras of highs with Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby, to periods of lows in between, Lange’s announcing made him a household name for Pittsburgh sports fans. He famously coined the introductory phrase “It’s a hockey night in Pittsburgh,” and closed out victories with “Elvis has just left the building.”
Lange, who was originally from Sacremento, retired following his last game called in 2021.
