PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh-area man is hospitalized with what police say is a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after holding a SWAT team and other officers at bay in a motel west of the city.

Police say the incident began Sunday about 8:30 p.m. at the Avalon Hotel along Route 65.

The incident ended early Monday when police say the man shot himself. He has been taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh where his condition was not immediately available.

Police indicate the man was distraught but it was unclear what, specifically, prompted the standoff.

Nobody else was hurt and there were no reports of hostages during the incident.

MCCANDLESS — Police recovered about 150 guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition from a one-bedroom apartment following a four-hour standoff in suburban Pittsburgh.McCandless police say officers arrested 57-year-old Russell Liang on Sunday morning. Officials say he confronted officers with an assault rifle around 1 a.m. as they responded to a medical call at an apartment building.A SWAT team helped remove Liang from the apartment about four hours later and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Liang faces charges including aggravated assault and making terroristic threats.Police say Liang had more than a hundred guns.

PITTSBURGH — A fugitive wanted for bank robbery in Michigan is in police custody after he walked into a Pittsburgh bar wearing only a hospital gown.Authorities say 20-year-old Elbert Lewis Thompson II walked out of Allegheny General Hospital and into JR's Bar on Friday night in a gown and with a needle in his arm, prompting a call to police. Thompson was taken into custody a short time later.Police in Vandergrift say Thompson had been detained by officers after fleeing a traffic stop there. He was initially hospitalized after complaining of feeling sick. Thompson is wanted in Oakland County, Michigan for armed robbery and other charges.
