Slippery Rock girls basketball is heading to the District 10 Class 4A semifinals and has punched its ticket to the PIAA Tournament.

Led by CJ Sabo’s 23-point, 11-rebound double-double, the No. 6 Rockets upset third-seed General McLane on Saturday 54-46 in the district quarterfinals at Meadville High School.

Madison Romanovich scored 18 points and grabbed four rebounds for Slippery Rock; all of her points came in the second half as she went 14 of 20 from the free-throw line.

The Rockets, who secured one of the four D10 seeds in the state tournament, now face No. 2 Harbor Creek in Wednesday’s semifinals at a site and time to be determined. Harbor Creek beat No. 7 Hickory 51-25 in another quarterfinal Saturday. The winner of the semifinal will face No. 5 Franklin or No. 1 Fairview, with the loser heading to the third-place game.

Mars heads into the district third-place game, with a PIAA berth already in hand, to face No. 6 Thomas Jefferson at a site and time to be determined. South Fayette will be the home team against No. 2 Peters Township in Friday’s final at Petersen Events Center.

The Lions flew out to a 21-2 run after one quarter. Alexis Cashdollar led Mars with nine points.

Zac Turberville finishes 4th at District 10

Slippery Rock’s Zac Turberville matched his finish a year ago at the District 10 Class 2A Boys Wrestling Individual Championships, this time at 160 pounds, by finishing fourth Saturday at Meadville High School.

Turberville wrestled back after a semifinal loss in the morning to General McLane’s Hudson Spires (7-4 decision) by beating Corry’s Lamech Albers 3-2 to make the bronze medal match.

Turberville had to medically forfeit the final match. His finish would qualify him for the PIAA Northwest Regional Tournament next week.
