JEFFERSON TWP — Knoch played at home, but isn’t ready to go home.
The Knights used a 10-0 run early in the second quarter to take command of their WPIAL Class 4A boys basketball consolation round playoff game against Elizabeth Forward and rolled to a 72-54 victory on their home floor Monday night.
The win moves Knoch (18-7) within one win of a berth in the PIAA Tournament. The Knights will host Deer Lakes, a 53-50 winner over Central Valley in the other 4A consolation, Wednesday night for the right to attain that state tourney berth.
“Our goal all season has been to get to the state playoffs,” Knoch coach Alan Bauman said. “We were in this same position last year and came up short. We consider this a stepping stone.
“(Wednesday’s game) will be a challenge, but we’ll be ready.”
Elizabeth Forward (18-7) took a 17-16 lead early in the second quarter on a trey by Tyler Basic. Knoch responded with that 10-0 run — spearheaded by 3-pointers from Jackson Bauman and Teegan Finucan — after a Zane Pacek layup put the Knights back in front.
The Warriors never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
After dolling out a few assists in the first half, Knoch junior guard/forward Derek Lang struck for 11 points in the third quarter as the Knights pulled away. He had a pair of treys among his four field goals in the quarter.
Knoch led by as many as 17 and took a 15-point lead into the fourth period.
“It usually takes me a while to find my shot,” Lang said. “The third quarter is generally when I get going,” Lang said.
“That’s the Derek Lang we know and love,” his beaming coach said.
Elizabeth Forward had not won a playoff game since 2013 before this season. The Warriors average nearly 70 points per game but never had a run of more than four points Monday night.
“It’s hard to get on a run against a team that plays defense like that,” Warriors coach Nolan Larry said of Knoch. “As long as they are, as deep as they are ... we just couldn’t get too much going tonight.”
Coach Bauman said he continually switched between a zone and fullcourt pressure “to keep them from getting into any kind of rhythm.”
Jackson Bauman led the Knights with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Lang contributed 16 points, five assists and four boards while Finucan tallied 11 points, three assists and three rebounds. Zane Pacek had five rebounds as Knoch enjoyed a 31-24 advantage on the boards.
“Defense is always important to us because when we can rebound or get a turnover, we play well in transition and that turns into a more effective offense for us,” Jackson Bauman said.
The Warriors placed four players in double figures. Basic led the way with 17 points, Cy Herchelroath had 11 points and five rebounds, Daniel Spence 10 points and eight boards, James Gile 10 points. Justin Flournoy had four assists.
“Our kids always play hard,” Larry said. “We just couldn’t slow them down enough.”
Knoch and Deer Lakes split during the regular season, each team winning on its home floor.
“It’s going to be fun,” Lang said of Wednesday’s game. “We’re all looking forward to it.”
“We want to play as long as we can,” Jackson Bauman added.
