State Attorney General warns of Bitcoin ATM scam
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday has issued a warning regarding a new scam involving the use of Bitcoin ATMs, which have become more and more prevalent throughout the state.
In this scheme, scammers will target unsuspecting individuals with messages urging them to make large cash withdrawals to protect themselves in some way. The individuals are then prompted to deposit the cash at a Bitcoin ATM and then send the scammer a QR code, transferring money to the scammer.
The attorney general’s office urges residents to never click on links in suspicious texts or emails; never respond directly to unexpected calls, emails or texts; never withdraw cash in response to an unexpected call or message; and never trust any message from a business or agency that supposedly asks for payment in cryptocurrency.
