PIAA regional wrestling: Butler’s Santino Sloboda, Kase Chopp cruise to Class 3A semis

Butler’s duo of Santino Sloboda and Kase Chopp found little trouble Friday on their way to the PIAA Class 3A Western Regional Tournament semifinals at Canon-McMillan High School.

Sloboda, who pinned his first opponent, won his first match of the postseason without bonus points, beating Central Mountain’s Alden Kunes 5-0 in the 127-pound quarterfinals. He’ll face Bellefonte’s Wyatt Long Saturday morning in the semis.

Chopp will face Central Mountain’s Dalton Perry in the 145-pound semis. He did have to edge out a 4-2 decision of Franklin Regional’s Max Firestine in the quarterfinals, but he pinned his first-round opponent.

Mars’ lone representative, 145-pounder Liam Hein, went 1-1 to make the consolation second round.

In Class 2A regional action Friday night, Knoch 145-pounder Owen Layhew fell to consolations after a first-round loss at the southwest regional at Altoona High School. He will face Burrell’s Cadyn Crawford Saturday morning.

North Catholic’s Michael Pierro (107), Victor Wagner (114) and Angelo Amelio (139) also will wrestle in consys, as will Summit Academy’s Rocco Zugal (127).

Shippensburg’s Zac Turberville won his 160-pound first-round match but lost by decision to Central Clarion’s Mason Gourley in the northwest regional at Sharon High School. Turberville will face Port Allegheny’s Zach Hunglville in the consolation first round Saturday morning.
