Mars man sentenced for box cutter attack on co-worker
A Mars man was given a prison sentence Wednesday in Common Pleas Court for attacking a co-worker with a box cutter.
Russell E. Smith Jr., 42, was sentenced to serve 30 to 84 months in state prison and pay $1,180 in restitution after pleading guilty to a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Smith was sentenced remotely from the county prison where he is being held on $150,000 bail.
He said he hopes he will receive treatment for anger issues while he is serving his sentence.
“I have anger problems,” Smith said.
State police filed charges against Smith following an Oct. 19 incident at the Aldi Distribution Center in Clinton Township where he cut a co-worker in the back of the neck following an argument.
The victim told police that he and Smith had argued in the cooler area, and he left following the argument.
As the victim was preparing the leave for the day, Smith ran toward him and cut him in the back of the neck with a box cutter causing a significant laceration, police said.
After a brief struggle, Smith was removed from the area and detained by other workers until police arrive. The box cutter was found and placed into evidence, police added.
Smith was being held in Butler County Prison in lieu of $450,000 bail. His bail was reduced to $150,000. He was given credit for having served 138 days.
