Man charged after alleged assault at Butler Memorial Hospital

A Butler man is facing multiple charges after an alleged assault inside the ER at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Butler Township police on Tuesday, March 11, charged 43-year-old John Wayne O’Donnell Jr. with one felony count of aggravated assault and two counts of misdemeanor simple assault. He’s accused of assaulting a hospital security officer.

According to an affidavit, O’Donnell was first brought to the hospital for a mental health evaluation after saying he was going to kill himself and attempted to light himself on fire with a lighter.

After being told to return to his room, O’Donnell slapped a cup of water out of a nurse’s hand before being restrained by two hospital security employees, according to the affidavit.

Police say during the incident, O’Donnell slapped one of the hospital employees and struck the employee in the face with his knee, while continuously yelling profanities.

O’Donnell was arrested and taken to Butler County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing in front of District Judge Kevin O’Donnell is scheduled for March 20.
