High school sports roundup: Butler tennis wins first match of season, Tornado volleyball opens with loss

Butler boys tennis picked up its first win of the season, beating Kiski 4-2 Friday at Butler High School.

Andrew Bocci cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 Singles 1 victory over Kody Cessna, and Ryan Curry beat Max Holm 7-5, 6-3 in Singles 3 for the Golden Tornado (1-1). Both Butler doubles pairs of Ryan Conaway/Landin Schooley and Laken Whisinnand/Creedon Dalton won in straight sets.

Boys volleyball

Alec Teff had nine kills and Peter Zulick seven blocks, but Greater Latrobe downed Butler in five sets in Friday night’s season opener. The scores of the match, from Butler’s perspective, were 22-25, 16-25, 25-17, 25-21, 15-11.

The Golden Tornado are 0-1 this season. They next face off at home against Mars.

Seneca Valley 3, Central Catholic 0 — The Raiders defeated the Vikings in straight sets. No further details were provided.

Softball

Leah Clark didn’t allow a hit in 5.1 innings in the circle, Jayden Rezak had a home run and four RBIs, and Addison Gourley had a triple in Freeport’s 7-4 win over Apollo-Ridge.

Boys lacrosse

Mars defeated Pine-Richland 12-6 at home as Henry Saver netted five goals and Jack Tirch another three. Luke Spreng made 15 saves in goal.
