High school roundup: Kyle Casteel pitches, hits Butler baseball to win; Freeport, Knoch softball victorious
Butler baseball thumped Shaler 10-4 Friday evening on the road to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Owen Boring (2-for-3) and Boden Lenyk (1-for-2) hit home runs and scored twice for the Golden Tornado, with Lenyk driving in two. Mavrik Clement doubled and drove in three runs, and Regan Peth was 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.
Kyle Casteel struck out eight and allowed just two hits and two walks in five scoreless innings of work.
Knoch 5, Kiski 1 — The Knights roped four doubles in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Sean Morgan, Kyle Morgan, Dylan Roth, Ryan McCurdy and Cooper Allison all had two-baggers, with McCurdy scoring once and driving in two runs. Zane Pacek went five innings for the win, striking out three while allowing an earned run on four hits.
Seneca Valley 3, Harborcreek 0 — Lexie Hames smacked a solo homer at the plate and struck out 12 against one hit in a shutout win. Neve Miller was 2-for-3 at the dish.
Freeport 13, East Allegheny 3 — Lauren Clark singled three times and drove in four runs, while Taelyn Toy singled and had two RBIs in the Yellowjackets’ win. Leah Clark threw four innings, allowing four hits and two runs while fanning seven.
North Catholic 5, Derry 0 — Kennedy Brown went the distance in the circle and struck out 16 to earn the shutout. She also went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored at the plate. Clare Kotwica matched that, going 2-for-4 with a three-bagger, RBI and run.
Knoch 10, Deer Lakes 0 — Grace Hensch, Lizzie Danik, Carissa Tekely and Marlee Fraser each had two hits, and Kaila Purcell went the distance in five innings for the win.
Mohawk 12, Mars 2 — The Planets fell on the road. No other stats were provided.
Seneca Valley fell to Hampton 3-2 Friday. Marco Lopez won his Singles 1 matchup vs. Jaxon Mayer 6-2, 6-2, and Doubles 2 pair Jackson Brandt and Andrew James won 6-2, 6-0.
The Raiders (1-3) face Butler on Monday.
