SLIPPERY ROCK — Mayor Jondavid Longo announced a proposal to grow milkweed and nectar plants on borough-owned property at Slippery Rock Area Parks and Recreation sites this Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22.

Longo said the idea came from discussions with Councilman Denton Zeronas about ways to increase attendance and education opportunities at the park. Longo said he recognizes the ecotourism and community sentiment toward a green community, calling the proposal a “win for everyone.”

As for a timeline, Longo said he hopes to be planting in the very near future.

“We’re currently finishing some spring cleaning at the park. We do continuous planting of trees and plants,” he said. “We don’t know if the milkweed will attract any monarchs this year, but we hope that maybe next year, the migration will be aware of it.”
