High school roundup: Butler softball loses on Mt. Lebanon walk-off; Slippery Rock baseball’s win streak ends

Butler softball’s offense erupted for 11 runs in the final three innings and held the lead.

But Mt. Lebanon scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, with S. Stroh ripping a walk-off grand slam off Butler reliever Kierra Smith to beat the Golden Tornado 13-12 Thursday evening. It was one of three Mt. Lebo homers on the night.

Lily Vicari set the tone for Butler’s offense, leading off with two doubles on a 2-for-5 day while driving in five runs and scoring one. Shylee Karenbauer (2-for-4) doubled, scored twice and had an RBI, and Marissa Sklencar (2-for-4) had two RBIs.

The Tornado fell to 2-12.

Knoch 4, Indiana 0 — Grace Hensch smacked a bases-clearing double in the second inning, and Marlee Fraser followed with an RBI single to give the Knights (13-1, 8-0 WPIAL Section 1-4A) all the runs they’d need.

Kaila Purcell fired a two-hit shutout, striking out two in an efficient performance (77 pitches). Lizzie Danik finished 2-for-3 with a run.

Punxsutawney 15, Karns City 4 (5 inn.) — Haley Sherman (2-for-2) and Lyrik Reed (1-for-3) doubled, with Sherman driving in two runs, in the road Gremlins’ (6-5) loss.

Jamestown 9, Slippery Rock 0 — The Rockets (2-8) were held to just three hits by Savannah Smith, Grace Wetzel and Brooke Madden.

Baseball

Slippery Rock’s unbeaten start came to an end Thursday with a 4-3 loss to Franklin. The Rockets now sit 9-1.

Jacob Kunsmen nearly carried Slippery Rock to its 10th straight win as he struck out eight and allowed one earned run in five innings on the mound while also going 3-for-3 with two doubles. Bryce Covert (1-for-3) drove in two runs.

Boys volleyball

Seneca Valley beat Pine-Richland 3-0. No other stats were provided.

Boys tennis

North Catholic’s two doubles teams made the second round of the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Tennis Doubles Championships this week.

No. 2-seed Alex Weber and Alex Lopez Foubert dominated the opening round 10-0, but Indiana’s Gabe Nettleton and Michael Dubetsky beat them 10-4 in Tuesday’s second round. The other Trojans pair of Jake Sinclair and Paddy McCabe, the 13th seed, upset Central Valley 11-10 (3) before falling to Quaker Valley’s Will Megher and Matthew Henry 10-4.

Mars’ Ethan Palmer and Cal Johnson lost in the Class 3A first round 10-4 to Franklin Regional’s Colin Stalnaker and Sanshiro Ogawa.

Gateway’s Zidaan Hassan and Logan Memije won 3A gold 6-4, 6-1 over Mt. Lebanon’s Luca Ritovoi and Mark Summers. The 2A gold South Park’s Jonah Jasek and Steven Duing, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4 winners over Valley’s Landon Harclerode and Tyler Quinn.

Montour 3, Seneca Valley 2 — The Raiders’ doubles pairs won both points. Paul Weis and Eric Chen won Doubles 1 6-0, 6-2, and Andrew James and Mason Klingensmith won Doubles 2 6-3, 6-1.

The Raiders’ regular season comes to an end Friday against Norwin.
