Butler Downtown finds relatively clean Main Street for spring tradition

About 40 volunteers for Butler Downtown brought their brooms and dustpans to Main Street Saturday morning, April 26, for the group’s annual spring cleanup, but found that the place was pretty litter-free, especially compared to the group’s usual fall cleanup.

Audrianna Bly, president of Butler Downtown, said the volunteers, some who were members of the nonprofit and others volunteering as groups of their own, still had plenty of ground to cover to help spruce up the city for spring.

“We do this in the spring and fall. Main and some of the side streets,” Bly said. “We pick up trash, cigarette butts, weeds, sweep up a little.”

Jen Hundertmark, chairwoman of Butler Downtown’s design committee, said the streets were cleaner on Saturday’s cleanup than they were the last time Butler Downtown cleaned up, which was in September. She chalked it up to there not being as many downtown events over the winter, but said she hoped to see less litter over the coming months until the next fall cleanup.

The cleanup itself was somewhat of a community downtown event. Bly said businesses and city officials donated supplies as well as food and drinks to the cause, so volunteers could get a little reward for their help.

“It’s really a community effort this time,” Bly said.

Although the cleanup Saturday had a fair share of volunteers, Bly said people can still get involved at Butler Downtown’s next cleanup, scheduled to take place in the fall. She said interested cleaners can watch Butler Downtown’s Facebook page and website for details on its events, including its cleanup dates.
