Suncrest Golf Course has a little for everybody, from leagues to charity events and more

PENN TWP — Christina Mock went from growing up on a farm to running a golf course.

Either way, she never had to travel very far to get to work.

Serving as director of golf operations at Suncrest Golf & Grille, Mock has been working at the course for 33 years. She’s always been familiar with it.

“The farm sits off the back side of the course,” Mock said. “I love being a part of Suncrest and the group that runs and takes care of both courses. We have a lot of dedicated people.”

St. Barnabas Communities owns Suncrest and Conley Golf Resort. Numerous packages are available to play both courses, as they are different from each other.

While Conley features a number of sand traps and doglegs, most of Suncrest’s holes are relatively straight shots with limited water hazards.

“My favorite hole at Suncrest is No. 14, a scenic (399-yard) par-4 that heads toward the farm and hits uphill,” said Douglas Day, president of St. Barnabas Communities. “No. 11 features a hilltop with an oak tree in play.

“Overall, it’s a unique course that plays straight with some forgiveness there. It’s a fun course to play.”

Other popular holes at Suncrest include the par-4 No. 6, which has an elevated tee and hits into a valley, and the 415-yard par-4 No. 18, which starts out hitting over water and has a slight dogleg left.

Sunset Golf & Grille features a snack shop and full-service bar. Sandwiches such as hot dogs, kielbasa and hot sausage are among the items available.

Neil Finn has served as superintendent at Suncrest and Conley for 11 years and describes their layouts as “totally different, challenging in their own way.”

Suncrest has 30 leagues that play both mornings and evenings, six ladies leagues and three mixed leagues, some that have been there for decades. Middle Road, a neighborhood league, is in its 48th year at the course.

The course also plays host to Mars and Shaler high school and junior varsity girls golf teams, along with Pine-Richland’s JV boys team.

Multiple travel leagues play weekly at Suncrest and Conley.

“The best times to find the course fairly open are on Mondays or mid-day during the week, between noon and 2 p.m.,” Mock said. “A lot of the leagues start around 3 p.m.”

The two courses combine to host 16 shotgun events, including 13 non-profit. Meals on Wheels, Butler PM Rotary, Gally Charities, TRY Charities and the Glade Run Fall Classic are among the many fundraising events there.

The price list at Suncrest includes $15.50 to walk nine holes on weekdays, $28 to walk 18 holes. Weekday fees are $25.75 and $43.50 with a cart. Prices are slightly elevated on weekends, and there are discounts for senior citizens age 62 or older.

“The pricing is right in line with courses around us,” said Mark Dennis, general manager of Conley and Suncrest. “What makes us stand out is the playability and hospitality people will find at both of our courses.”

Stay and Play packages are popular at the courses, which cover 250 acres. The hotel, along with Knickers Cafe, are part of the clubhouse facility at Conley.

The courses are right next to each other.

“Golfers can stay here, play both courses, eat here ... never have to get back in their cars,” Day said. “That’s a unique setup.”
