John W. Bacon
John W. Bacon, 95, of Cabot passed away on Dec. 27, 2020, at Concordia Lutheran Ministries.
Born Aug. 14, 1925, in Barnesboro, he was the son of James Bacon and Marie Esch Bacon.
As a son of a coal miner, John grew up in the coal fields of Indiana County during the Great Depression.
John graduated in 1943 from Green Township High School in Commodore.
He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in September 1943, served as a corporal, communications specialist for the 97th Fighter Control Squadron. He was discharged from the Army in March 1946.He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1950. After graduation, he taught science at Purchase Line High School.He married Nancy Crawford on Dec. 26, 1953.In 1957, he was awarded a National Science Foundation Scholarship to complete his master's degree at Penn State. After graduating in 1958, he moved his family to the Saxonburg area, where he took a job teaching physics, chemistry and biology at the newly opened Knoch High School.In 1965, he joined the new Butler County Community College, where he served as dean of science and technology for 20 years, until his retirement in 1985. During his tenure at the college, he was instrumental in establishing many of the degree programs in nursing, metrology, electronics and computer science.John enjoyed traveling, camping and custom woodworking.He was a member of the Zion Methodist Church in Sarver, where he taught Sunday school.Christian camping was very important in John's life. He served as Camp Corbly director, where he met his wife. He continued this service at Laurel Highlands Baptist Camp for many years.Surviving are his children, David (Beverly) Bacon of Gibsonia, Daniel Bacon of Butler, James (Susan) Bacon of Butler, and Kate (Don) Smith of Blairsville; six grandchildren, Kristina (Josh) Zapf, Stephanie (Anthony) DaDamo, Kevin (Kayla) Bacon, Anna Smith, Jamie Bacon and Sarah (Brock) Wojichowski; and four great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nancy Bacon; three sisters, Ruth Fleming, Wilma Edwards and Sue Orr; and two infant children.BACON — Private family services for John W. Bacon, who died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, will be held Wednesday at Fox Funeral Home in Saxonburg, with the Rev. Robert Wilson officiating.Interment will be in the Zion U.M.
