PITTSBURGH — A judge this morning found a man guilty of manslaughter in a fatal shooting of a former Slippery University football player outside a downtown Pittsburgh restaurant.

Judge Jeffrey Manning found that 23-year-old Isiah Smith didn’t act in self-defense in the August 2013 shooting that left 24-year-old Zachary Sheridan dead.

Sheridan played football at SRU. He also had worked at the Ginger Hill restaurant in Slippery Rock for two years in the past.

Allegheny County prosecutors say Smith told police at least three versions of what happened in the early morning hours outside the Original Hot Dog Shop in Pittsburgh. Additionally, prosecutors say surveillance video shows Sheridan was running away after the earlier fight when he was shot.

Prosecutors argued the shooting amounts to third- or first-degree murder, which carries life in prison, but Manning ruled for the lesser manslaughter charge, which has a maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years.

Sentencing is July 2.
