Y event trots through Butler for 26th time
At 10 a.m. Saturday, Butler celebrates a 26-year old tradition with the Butler Family YMCA Turkey Trot 5K Run-Walk Race.
The event might be an old standard, but its director is new. John Stone, newly installed sports and family director at the YMCA, is now at the helm.
The former Pittsburgh resident will rely on the expertise and dedication of the many volunteers who make this a successful event each year, and he said, "We can always use more help."
To volunteer, call 724-287-4733 or contact Stone at jstone@bcfymca.org
Stone expects about 150 participants for this year's Turkey Trot, which begins and ends at the YMCA on Penn Street and includes a loop of scenic Memorial Park.
The race is publicized on the YMCA website and to the Y's mailing list, but participants are a mix of YMCA members and non-members. Members from any YMCA are eligible to win competitive awards presented to the first male and female YMCA members to finish the race.
Although there is not a separate competitive walking division, all participants are eligible to win raffle prizes and can enjoy refreshments of water, juice and fruit following the event.
One of the benefits to staging an event at the YMCA is the access to shower and locker room facilities. Registration and the awards ceremony also will take place within the warmth of the Y.
It's too late register online for this Saturday's Turkey Trot 5K but day-of-event registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at the Butler YMCA. Late registration costs $15. Course maps are available. Commemorative T-shirts are limited in number and will be issued to late registrants on a first-come, first- served basis.
For information about the 26th annual Turkey Trot, which will be held rain or shine, call 724-287-4733 or email jstone@bcfymca.org
A word of warning: Now is the time to dig that reflective vest and clothing out of the closet for those suddenly darker evening runs. And remember that the sun at your back means that oncoming cars may be blinded by the light. Choose your route wisely.
