SRU gets notoriety from actress Adams
Slippery Rock University has a famous fan. Or, at least, a famous person who likes its T-shirt.
SRU last week posted a photograph of actress Amy Adams wearing an SRU T-shirt while walking with her fiance, artist Darren Le Gallo. The caption says “You ROCK girl.”
Rita Abent, an SRU spokesman, said that public relations staff members found the picture and decided to post it on the university’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
She said the staff knows little about the picture, but they believe that it was taken in September while the actress was shopping in Los Angeles.
Adams, 39, who is not an SRU alum, was born in Italy and raised mostly in Castle Rock, Colo. She has appeared in movies and television since 1999, with roles in “Catch Me If You Can,” “The Fighter,” and “Julie and Julia.”
Abent said that SRU T-shirts often show up in unexpected, distant places.
“People just like the name,” Abent said.
Joe Flynn, manager of SRU’s bookstore, agreed, saying that SRU T-shirts end up all over the place, and it isn’t always alumni who buy them.
“We have quite a big Internet business; people all over the country (buy them),” Flynn said
He noted that a large number of people from Michigan buy SRU shirts, partially due to the fact that SRU football scores are announced at University of Michigan games.
Adams is a five-time Academy Award nominee.
Last week, Adams won the Golden Globe Award for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in “American Hustle,” which also stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. This year, she also appears in the movie “Her,” starring Joaquin Phoenix.
Representatives for Adams could not be reached for comment.
