County youths head for 'Field of Dreams'
SLIPPERY ROCK — Jeff Steele is a big fan of stay-at-home baseball.
But this is one trip the Slippery Rock Area Baseball Association vice president couldn't pass up.
Steele and SRABA president Mike Johnson are taking a group of 9-10-year-olds to Dyersville, Iowa, this weekend to play in the Swing for the Stalks Tournament. The event is being held at fields on the movie set of where the motion picture “Field of Dreams”was filmed.
“Travel baseball is all over the place,” Steele said. “It can get a little crazy. I like our local association and playing games in our own league.
“We did have a team play at the Ripken Tournament (in Aberdeen, Md.) and saw an advertisement for this tournament in Iowa. I thought it'd be fun to get some kids together and go.”
Slippery Rock plays in the Northern Butler County League with Moniteau, Karns City and Harrisville. Johnson emphasized the team going to Iowa is not an all-star team selected from the SRABA, which has roughly 150 kids ages 5-17.
“This is just a group of families that got together and was able to work this trip out,” Johnson said. “It should be a pretty competitive team, actually.”
Steele said the team was assembled through family connections and kids knowing each other through other sports as well.
“These guys are all buddies. All of the parents are familiar with each other. It should be a fun trip,” Steele said.
The team will play under the moniker “North Shore Nine — referring to Lake Arthur — and consists of Isaac Steele, Liam Johnson, Carter Rudish and Manuel Eusebio of Slippery Rock, Kole Rea of Butler, Liam Hobaugh of Karns City, Trey Graham of Seneca Valley, Chris Frangos, Matt Murphy and Chase Walker of Hubbard, Ohio.
There will be 10 teams in the 9-10 division. All teams are guaranteed to play at least three games.
“The championship game will be played on the actual field they filmed the movie on,” Steele said.
Games will be played during the day Saturday. Skills competition, including a home run derby, will take place Friday night.
Later Friday evening, teams will be able to sit on the outfield grass and watch an outdoor showing of “Field of Dreams.”
“This is the perfect age for these kids to make this trip,” Steele said. “I have one son playing, but I'm taking my other two sons, too. They all know about the movie.
“This is an experience they'll really enjoy. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The North Shore Nine will play the Denver (Colo.) Legends and Flash Baseball (Wisconsin) Saturday. Teams from Indiana, Iowa and Illinois will also be in the tournament.
