Ultramarathon is off and running

Hey sleepy heads. Rise and shine. You don't know what you're missing.

The Glacial Ridge Trail Ultramarathon is off and running.

And running. And running. And running.

At the crack of dawn, more than 350 not-so-ordinary runners gathered to test their mettle on the backwoods trails at Moraine State Park.

Rain - and pain - is in the forecast.

These adventure seekers/nature lovers/super competitors are participating in the eighth annual event that features four separate endurance races.

The shortest race is a 30K. That's 18.6 miles for the metric system impaired.

There's also a 50K, or 31-mile race; a 50-miler; and a 50-mile five-person relay.

Sprinters aren't welcome.

It'll take hours to many hours for these runners to traverse and navigate the winding, hilly and muddy courses naturally booby-trapped with rocks and tree roots.

But the spectacular scenery along the way, not to mention the strategically-placed aid stations, will be there to inspire and motivate the runners.

This year's participants hail from more than a dozen states, including Texas and Colorado.

The field also has a bit of an international flavor with several runners from Canada. Pretty good, eh?
