Ship nets sweep at Critchfield

A day after earning a doubleheader sweep at Shippensburg University, the Slippery Rock University baseball team had the tables turned on it as Ship took two from The Rock, 3-0 and 4-2 in 13 innings at Critchfield Park.

OnSaturday, senior right-hander Chris Squeglia and sophomore left-hander Rich Hocanson hurled back-to-back complete-game three-hitters as SRU won 3-1 and 6-0.

But onSunday, Shippensburg's pitchers returned the favor.

The Rock managed just seven hits in the first game against Ship pitcher Tim Freshour and could not push a run across.

Grove City HighSchool graduate Billy Herman had two hits for The Rock. There were no extra base hits in the game.

In the second game, the two teams combined to strand 33 runners on base.

Matt Adams was 4-for-5 and Herman and Scott Bender each had two hits for SRU.

Slippery Rock High School grad Mike DeCola pitched 2 2/3 innings, surrendering one hit and striking out five for The Rock (12-7, 2-2). He also walked four batters.

Softball

Stacey Rhoades hit a two-run home run and Jordan Zeunges had three hits, including a double, but the Slippery Rock University softball team lost its third and fourth straight games in a home-opening doubleheader loss to Indiana (Pa.) UniversitySunday afternoon.

Rhoades homer cand Zeunges' three-hit game came in the nightcap.

After a 12-2 start, The Rock is now 12-6 and 0-4 in the conference.
