Man, woman face drugs charges

A call for a possible overdose in a new car at a Cranberry Township convenience store Saturday morning ended with a Crawford County man and woman behind bars, according to authorities.

Cranberry Township police said they seized suspected crystal methamphetamine and OxyContin pills along with other drug contraband from the 2021 Nissan Altima.

District Judge Bill O'Donnell arraigned Jason M. Oakes, 46, and Melissa A. Kump, 48, both of Guys Mills, on misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Oakes also is charged with driving without a license. The defendants are in the Butler County Prison on $25,00 bond each.

Police said officer and a Cranberry EMS crew were called to the Sheetz on Freedom Road about 7:40 a.m. after an employee reported that a man and woman were possibly passed out in a car in the parking lot. It was unknown if the man overdosed or was having a seizure.

Both defendants were “awake and alert” when police got there, according to charging documents. Police learned Oakes was wanted on a warrant out of Crawford County.

In plain view, police said, officers noticed suspected drug-related items strewn about the car. When officers opened the driver's door to get Oakes out, an eyeglass case full of empty syringes allegedly fell out of the car and onto the ground.

Police said they also found another eyeglass case on the driver's side that contained four syringes, including three that were “loaded.”

Kump told officers that loaded syringes contained “meth and oxy,” documents said.

Police said they found a pink box containing meth in one of Oakes' pants pockets.

Additionally, documents said, officers searched Kump's purse and turned up a container with suspected meth, a baggie of “semi crushed” pills believed to be OxyContin, more syringes, razor blades and a glass pipe.
