Catching up to the past
SLIPPERY ROCK — Dan Herisko and Brad Wilson picked the perfect time this year to revert to last year.
Herisko was one of Slippery Rock University baseball's most dependable starting pitchers in 2005 and Wilson hit well over .500 during the team's spring trip to Florida a season ago.
Neither got off to a good start this spring — until Saturday.
Herisko tossed a four-hit shutout in the first game and Wilson delivered a three-run homer in the nightcap as The Rock swept a doubleheader from Lock Haven, 4-0 and 7-3, at Critchfield Park.
The twin wins give SRUa 3-1 record in PSACWest play. The Rock split a twin bill at Lock Haven Friday, winning the first game 9-6 before dropping the second, 3-2, in eight innings.
"Losing that second one was disappointing because we had chances to win late,"SRUcoach Jeff Messer said. "But I'll take three out of four against a team in our league anytime."
Herisko entered Saturday's start sporting a 6.56 earned run average, having allowed 17 earned runs in 23 Qe innings. But the Bald Eagles never touched him.
Lock Haven managed just four singles, never got a runner to third base and never had more than a single baserunner in an inning.
"I knew this was a huge start and an important game after that loss Friday,"Herisko said. "All I wanted to do was throw strikes. Our defense played an outstanding game."
Herisko threw only 93 pitches and The Rock did not commit an error in Game 1.
"Danny had been trying to do too much out there,"Messer said. "Today he settled down and pitched his game. It seemed like he was trying to strike everybody out before.
"He was changing speeds and throwing all three of his pitches for strikes. Anybody is tough to hit when a pitcher's doing that."
Grove City High School graduate and freshman second baseman Billy Herman tripled off the right field fence in the second inning and scored on a ground ball to get The Rock on the board. Dave Gonos added a double, single and two RBI later in the game.
Herisko didn't need much else.
"That kid just pitched a crafty game,"Lock Haven coach Paul Stover said. "Our hitters were off-balance and never seemed to get any good swings at him.
"Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the other guy. This was one of those times."
Colin Scott went the distance for The Rock in the nightcap, scattering seven hits and throwing 102 pitches. He had a 5-0 lead before Lock Haven finally dented the scoreboard in the fourth inning.
SRU's Phil Butch had two triples in the contest, the first one knocking home J.D. Lowry with the game's first run in the second inning. Ryan Dillon homered to left in the third and Wilson delivered a three-run homer in the same inning.
Wilson began the twin bill with a .259 batting average, no homers and four RBIin SRU's first 21 games. He collected five RBISaturday.
"Brad really needed that,"Messer said of the three-run homer. "He had a big grin on his face when he came around third base."
"I haven't been too worried about my hitting,"Wilson said. "Balls haven't been falling in for me as much so far this year. That's part of baseball. It'll come around."
Lock Haven got to Scott for single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but never threatened to take the lead. Preston Hitchcock's two doubles paced a seven-hit attack.
Gonos added another double and single in the nightcap for SRUagainst a pitching-thin Bald Eagle squad.
Second-game starter Jason Brindle lasted just one inning for the visitors, walking three and not allowing a run before being pulled.
"He's my No. 1 pitcher, but he slept wrong on his arm during our bus ride home from Florida,"Stover said. "He caused some inflammation there and hasn't been right since.
"We've lost two pitchers to grades and two to injuries. You can't afford that against this type of competition."
