SRU splits with Lock Haven, misses out on PSAC playoffs
Slippery Rock University's baseball team has a share of the PSAC West championship - but not a share of the PSAC Tournament.
The Rock (31-13, 12-8) split a doubleheader with Lock Haven Saturday at Critchfield Park - winning the first game 2-1 and losing the nightcap 8-4 - and wound up in a four-way tie with California, Shippensburg and Clarion for the PSAC West title.
This marks the 15th time in Jeff Messer's 20 seasons as SRU coach that the squad has won or shared the league crown.
But only three teams advance to the PSAC Tournament and The Rock is the odd-team out in the tiebreaker - head to head competition against the other three.
SRU's season will only continue if it receives a berth in the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional Tournament. That field will be announced May 16.
SRU was ranked fourth in the region's most recent poll, released Wednesday. California was fifth. Clarion and Shippensburg were not ranked among the top eight.
In Saturday's action, Matt Kozuzko homered with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to give The Rock a 2-1 victory in the first game. Troy Wilson and Nick Armstrong - the latter the winner in relief - combined on a two-hitter.
The Rock managed just five hits in the first game. Kozusko's homer was the team's lone extra-base hit.
SRU banged out 12 hits in the nightcap, but Lock Haven (17-26, 7-13) used a five-run third inning to overcome an early 4-1 deficit.
Starting pitcher Colin Scott took the loss, failing to get out of that third inning.
Phil Butch, Kozusko, Matt Messer, Chase Rowe and Chris Tolliver all had two hits for SRU. Kozusko had two RBI, Rowe and Tolliver picking up one each.
