Sylvan Peart “Sid” Snyder

Sylvan Peart “Sid” Snyder, 85, of Slippery Rock Borough passed away peacefully surrounded by family at 10:30 p.m. Monday at Grove City Medical Center.

He was born July 1, 1932, in Slippery Rock, to Russell Arthur Snyder and Pearl Angeline Jackson Snyder.

Sid graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1950.

Sid was a U.S. Navy Veteran Airman 3rd Class, serving from 1950 until 1954. Upon return from his military service, Sid attended Grove City College from 1954 until 1958.

He married Vernie Lois Shaffer Sept. 15, 1956.

He worked for the family business, Snyder Bus Company and Garage, in Slippery Rock with his father and brother beginning in 1954 until 1970 when he and his brother, Art, purchased the business from their father. Sid and Art owned and operated the company until 1986 when Sid retired.

He was a member of Center Presbyterian Church and served on the board of directors for First National Bank of Slippery Rock for more than 39 years until the bank was sold in 2004.

Sid loved golf, bowling and all sports. He was a member of numerous Slippery Rock golf leagues, Slippery Rock Bowling League, Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company, Slippery Rock VFW and Slippery Rock American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Vernie at home; daughters, Debra Ann Snyder of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Patricia (Dave) Doyle of Slippery Rock; two grandchildren, Alison and Martin Doyle; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Art; and his sisters, Ortha Goehring, Emmie Decker and Billie Renick.

SNYDER — Memorial services for Sylvan Peart “Sid” Snyder, who died Monday, Feb. 26, 2018, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Center Presbyterian Church, 211 Center St., Slippery Rock, with the Rev. William Mumaw III presiding.The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the social hall of the church.Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park in Grove City.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team, PO Box 117, Slippery Rock, PA.
