Baden man sentenced to prison, must register as sex predator
A man who had dozens of online conversations with what he thought was a 13-year-old girl and then asked the girl to meet him in a parking lot will have to register as a sexual predator for 10 years.
Andrew Mine, 30, of Baden,Beaver County, also will spend 2 to 4 years in state prison followed by 7 years of probation.
Butler County Judge William Shaffer sentenced Mine Tuesday but did not find that he was a sexually violent predator, which would have required him to register for the remainder of his life. Instead, once he is released from prison he will have to register his home and work addresses with state police for 10 years under what is commonly known as Megan's Law.
Defense attorney Kevin Flaherty asked the court to give Mine a lesser sentence and allow him in a program that would have permitted him to be on house arrest.
"This appears to have been an isolated incident," Flaherty said. "He's accepted responsibility."
Mine asked the judge for mercy.
"I have a job Ireally love right now and a family that supports me," Mine said, noting he works for Sonic in Wexford.
While the sentence Shaffer doled out of 2 to 4 years in prison is less than the standard range, he denied Mine the chance for house arrest.
Mine in March 2008 began an online conversation in a popular chat room with someone who identified herself as a 13-year-old Cranberry Township girl. Really, the girl was an undercover agent from the state Attorney General's office.
During the next five months, Mine had 34 online conversations with the girl, texted her from his cell phone on multiple occasions, and called her several times. At times, he described how he would like to touch the girl and asked her if she would touch him.
Finally, in August 2008, Mine asked the girl to walk from her home to a closed ice cream shop and meet him in his car. Cranberry Township police arrested Mine.
Mine in December pleaded guilty to unlawful contact with a minor and criminal use of a communication facility.
Shaffer deferred Mine's sentence until Monday and gave him credit for 8 days of time served.
