Sex offender arrested in Ga.
A Butler man listed as a sexual offender is awaiting extradition back to Pennsylvania after police in Georgia arrested him Monday.
Charles Harold Beck, 37, was nabbed on a felony warrant and remains in the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta.
State police in Butler have been looking for Beck since the end of June when they learned he absconded to North Carolina, six months after leaving his job at a lumber company in the Mars area.
District Judge Pete Shaffer on July 23 issued an arrest warrant for Beck on charges he failed to comply with the reporting requirements under the state's Megan's Law, the law that tracks the whereabouts of sex offenders.
Under the law, offenders must annually confirm their address with state police. They also must register whenever they move, change employment or enroll in school.
Beck is included in the Megan's Law registry for a 1997 conviction in the state of Washington on a charge of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.
Butler police July 8 contacted state police after determining Beck was no longer living at his Bredin Avenue address, which he had registered with state police on Nov. 29, 2007.
But city police discovered Beck had not been at that home for at least two weeks, according to court documents.
State police on July 9 also learned that Beck's employment status was outdated. He had not worked at the lumber company since December 2007.
Investigators, with the help of Beck's sister, tracked the defendant to North Carolina, where he had been working for a construction firm.
But by the time state police contacted authorities in North Carolina, Beck apparently had left that state. The FBI joined the search for Beck, who was discovered Monday at a construction site in Roswell, Ga., a suburb just north of Atlanta.
Roswell police on Monday arrested Beck.
State police said extradition proceedings that would return Beck to Pennsylvania to face felony charges for failing to comply with Megan's Law are planned.
He also is wanted on a pair of child-support warrants in Butler County.
