Web sex case sentencing set

A Maryland man who traveled to Cranberry Township to meet and have sex with someone whom he believed to be a young girl will be sentenced Oct. 23.

Ricardo Daniels, a 43-year old U.S. Army Reservist, has pleaded guilty to criminal attempted unlawful contact with a minor.

According to court records, Daniels had been communicating on the Internet with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.

In reality, the person was an agent from the state Attorney General's Child Predator Unit, according to court records.

Daniels solicited and sent sexually graphic nude videos over the Internet before agreeing to meet the "child" in Pittsburgh the weekend of Nov. 3, according to court documents.

Court records say Daniels told the agent that they could "go to my hotel if you like." He said he worried about being caught and asked the agent if she was going to tell anyone about their plans to meet.

Daniels was arrested in Cranberry Township Nov. 3.

He spent about a month in prison until his bail was lowered to $100,000, for which he posted a bond. He is free on that bond until sentencing.

According to court records, as part of his release, the court decided Daniels could use the Internet only between 10 a.m. and midnight Mondays through Fridays "in a manner in which he can provide documentation as to the sites accessed by the defendant."

Butler County Judge George Hancher, who will sentence Daniels, has ordered the defendant to be evaluated by the state's Sexual Offender's Board prior to sentencing.

The board will determine if Daniels meets the criteria for a predator under the state's Megan's Law, and therefore would be compelled to register his address with state police.

Daniels was prosecuted in Butler County court by the state attorney general's office. The office's Child Predator Unit was created in January 2005 to catch Internet predators.

Already, the unit has a second case of similar circumstances pending in Butler County.

Thomas Vascotto, 46, of Cynthia, Ky., on Aug. 4 allegedly drove to Cranberry Township to have sex with a 13-year-old girl he met in an Internet chat room.

Instead, he too was met by an undercover agent from the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Child Predator Unit.

Vascotto also is charged with attempted unlawful contact with a minor and 33 counts of dissemination or possession of child pornography, 11 counts of obscene or sexual performances and one count of criminal use of a computer.

Vascotto's preliminary hearing is scheduled for today at the Cranberry Township office of District Judge Kelley Streib.
