Richard Glenn “Butch” Freehling Sr.

Richard Glenn “Butch” Freehling Sr., 75, of Butler, passed away Thursday at VA Butler Healthcare Medical Center.

Born in Cabot March 4, 1940, he was a son of the late Ralph W. and Maybelle Reardon Freehling.

He was a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper and retired after 20 years of service.

He received a commendation from the governor of Pennsylvania for his work as lead investigator in the 1980 “666” fraud investigation.

Before entering the state police, he was employed at Du-Co Ceramics in Saxonburg.

After retiring, he was employed as a security guard and also as a private investigator.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the American Legion and Fraternal Order of Police and he was a former member of Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Department.

He attended Community College of Allegheny County.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by two sons, Gregory Freehling of Wexford and Richard Freehling and his wife, Meredith, of Durham, N.C.; one daughter, Amy Freehling of Saxonburg; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by one brother, Gerald Freehling and his wife, Marianne, of Georgia; four sisters, Joan Lindquist and her husband, Alan, of Ephrata, Pa., Susan Cavalero and her husband, Donald, of Butler, Judy LaHart of Albany, N.Y., and Sandra McDermott of Erie, Pa.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

FREEHLING — Friends of Richard Glenn “Butch” Freehling Sr., who died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Martin Funeral Home, 429 Center Ave., Butler.Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Ed Rogland, chaplain of VA Medical Center, officiating.Burial will take place in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.
