Marla Crawford of Valencia, was accepted for admission to Saint Vincent College for the fall 2010 semester. She plans to major in biology.The daughter of Leonard and Rosemary Crawford, she expects to graduate in June from Mars High School.———
The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) named <B>Sarah McAfee</B> of Butler a PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Scholar-Athlete of the Month for January.A graduate of Butler High School, she is a senior at Thiel College and a biology/pre-veterinary medicine major.She runs for the cross country team in the fall and the track and field team in the spring. She is a three-year letter winner to date, helped set a school record during her junior year and competed twice in cross country regionals.She is a member of the Tri-Beta Honorary Biology and the Les Lauriers Senior Honor Societies and has made dean's list for six semesters. She also has made the PAC Academic Honor Roll three times and worked in the athletic department at Thiel.———
<B>Josh Denny</B> of Butler won first place Jan. 18 at the Butler County American Legion Oratorical. His prepared oration dealt with the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery. A student at Butler High School, he is the son of John and Denise Denny of Butler.———<BR></BR><BR></BR><B>Adam Riddle </B>of Slippery Rock won second place with his prepared oration on the separation of powers. He is the son of Ed and Evelyn Weiss of Slippery Rock.———<BR></BR><BR></BR>The University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio, has awarded merit scholarships and endowed scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year.The following students were awarded:• <B> Kristine Patterson</B> of Cabot was awarded the President's Scholarship. She is an equestrian studies major.• <B> Jessica Kummer</B> of Renfrew was awarded the Florence F. Overmire Scholarship. She is an animal science major.• <B>Lauren Burke</B> of Valencia was awarded the Trustee's Scholarship. She is a social work major.———
<B>Jonathan Burns</B> of Chicora is participating in St. Francis University's study abroad program in France. A sophomore physician assistant major, Burns left for France Jan. 14 and will return May 2. Burns and his fellow classmates will spend the semester in southwestern France in the village of Ambialet.———<BR></BR><BR></BR><B>Angela Wells</B> of Seven Fields was named a Sister Rita Yeasted Award recipient at La Roche College. Wells, a senior majoring in English education, received a $2,000 scholarship for the spring semester. This is the second year she has received this scholarship.A 2001 graduate of Oak Glen High School in New Cumberland, W.Va., she will graduate from La Roche this year. She is the daughter of Timothy and Vonnie Wells of Weirton, W.Va.———<BR></BR><BR></BR><B>Benjamin Gutmann</B> of Cranberry Township and 13 other Westminster College senior history majors and 20 senior sociology majors presented their capstone research Dec. 11. A graduate of Seneca Valley High School, he is a son of Gregory and Kathleen Gutmann. Gutmann presented "Aviation: A Fight for Recognition."At Westminster, the final component of liberal studies is a senior study, or capstone, course. The capstone is a four-semester-hour (minimum) course within the major designed to provide an opportunity for students to evaluate and assess the strengths and limitations of their major field.———<BR></BR><BR></BR><B>Nicole Salopek</B> of Seven Fields was named to the President's List at Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va.
