Snowy weather shifted quickly Sunday
Most Butler County residents woke up to a winter weather advisory Sunday morning, but as the snow arrived, weather experts saw a stronger storm than anticipated.
“The latest data showed that the higher snow amounts were going to be a little higher north,” said Michael Brown, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh.
Butler County, along with other parts of Western Pennsylvania, received a special weather statement around 1:10 p.m. Sunday, calling for heavy snow to the northern part of the county, particularly in the Slippery Rock area.
“Visibilities will drop to one-half mile or less,” the alert said.
A winter weather advisory went into effect around 10:30 a.m. calling for added snow accumulations. As of Saturday night, the weather service was expecting about 2 to 4 inches of snow for Butler County.
At 2:30 p.m., Brown said many of the counties north of Pittsburgh already had 2 to 3 inches on the ground with snowfall expected to continue until 7 p.m.
“It's going to gradually taper off in the next few hours,” Brown said. at that time. “There's going to be some flares in the back end, but we have some dry air coming in, so it'll shut off pretty quickly.”
The winter weather impacted road conditions too.
Throughout the late morning and early afternoon, Butler County dispatchers sent out a number of emergency crews to vehicle crashes throughout the county.
Between 10:32 a.m. and 11:56 a.m., there were six dispatches for vehicle accidents, according to a noon progress report from dispatchers.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation did post some restrictions on both Interstates 79 and 80, including lowering speeds of commercial vehicles.
Though the snow stopped Sunday evening, temperatures throughout the day and through the night remained below freezing.
“It’s going to be a cold night with single-digit temperatures,” Brown said Sunday.
The weather service also is forecasting more snow Monday, expected to arrive around 3 p.m.
Brown said currently he expects the snow to continue through Tuesday night and maybe into Wednesday morning.
“We’re expecting another 2 inches or so in the area,” he said. “Maybe 1 to 3 inches.”
