Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Sapienza, 84, formerly of Harmony, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021, in Ohio, where she had been residing.

Born Aug. 11, 1937, in Butler, she was the daughter of the late Claude Orville Kniess and Lillian Elizabeth (Haigh) Kniess.

Betty was a former member of St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church in Zelienople, for several years. She currently was a parishioner of St. Philip the Apostle in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds that visited her yard.

She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Joseph Sapienza IV, and his wife, Darlene, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; her grandson, Joseph Sapienza V, and his wife, Melissa, of Cincinnati, Ohio; her great-grandchildren, Zoey, Kayla, Brooke and Destiney; her brother, Claude David Kniess, and his wife, Dora, of Evans City; her sister, Nancy Louise Nicklas of California; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Sapienza III, who died in 2005; and her brother, Ronald Eugene Kniess.

SAPIENZA — Friends of Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Sapienza, who died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Boylan Funeral Home, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church, 2 W. Beaver St., Zelienople.

She will be laid to rest with her husband at the Zelienople Community Mausoleum.

Memorial donations may be made in her honor to the American Cancer Society.
