Indoor records fall

Butler, Slippery Rock track teams shine at Youngstown State meet

Butler and Slippery Rock broke some respective school records during their participation in a high school indoor track and field meet hosted by Youngstown State University over the weekend.

The Golden Tornado’s Guinness Brown placed second in the 60 meters while setting a school record of 7.02 seconds. He also took second in the 200 meters in 22.06 seconds, the fastest time in the state so far this season.

Butler’s 4x400 relay team of Lucas Slear, Ryder Kriley, Presley Ornelas and Brown ran a time of 3 minutes, 26.90 seconds, setting a school record and finishing first in the meet.

Though he finished second in the 3,200 meters, C.J. Singleton lowered his own school record to 9 minutes, 2.23 seconds. He finished Saturday’s race behind Josh Edwards of University (W.Va.) High School. Edwards is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the event and will be running at Oregon next year.

Slippery Rock’s Ethan Folmer won the triple jump with a school-record leap of 42 feet, 10.5 seconds. Dustin Joyce placed fifth in the long jump with a school-record 19 feet, 11 inches.

Girls Basketball

Gianna Bedel scored 18 points and Slippery Rock built a 24-point lead by halftime in cruising to a 48-20 victory over Meadville. Bronwyn McCoy added nine points.

Meadville trailed 45-12 after three quarters.

Boys Basketball

Tasso Sfanos and Zach Schlegel combined for 46 points as Mars defeated Hickory, 68-41, in the Ron Galbraith Classic Saturday at Westminster College.

Sfanos netted 25 points while Schlegel added 21. Mars (11-1) had an 18-point lead at halftime in rolling to its seventh consecutive win.

Wrestling

Butler placed fifth out of 16 teams Saturday at the Clearfield Duals, defeating four of the five teams it faced. The Golden Tornado’s lone loss was a 37-27 decision to Benton, which went on to lose to Clearfield in the finals.

Butler defeated General McLane 35-31, Curwensville 42-24, Hempfield 39-26 and Canton (Pa.) 41-24. Matt Zinkhann, wrestling at 160 pounds, was the lone Butler wrestler to go 5-0.

Finishing 4-1 for the Tornado were Kelley Schaukowitsch at 113 pounds, Kase Chopp at 126 and 132, Levi Donnel at 145 pounds and Jake Pomykata at heavyweight.
