Sailboat capsizes; man pulled from Lake Arthur

A day of sailboating Sunday on Lake Arthur in Worth Township didn't end the way a 59-year-old Mars man intended.

Moraine State Park rangers had to rescue the man about 4:30 p.m. after his boat capsized not far from the Nealy's Point boat launch, authorities said. He was not injured. Park officials did not release his name.

The man had been sailing alone for a few hours when he blamed wind for the mishap, said Curtis Reynolds, a ranger. He apparently was unable to adjust the position of the sail in time, and the boat overturned.

He told officials that he was able to keep his head above water and he climbed on top of the boat. He was wearing a personal floatation device.

“We had our eyes on him the whole time,” Reynolds said. Rangers went out and plucked the man out of the water, and towed his boat ashore.

There weren't a lot of boats on the lake Sunday, officials said, but there were a decent number of picnickers and hikers enjoying Mother's Day.

The water temperature at the time of the sailboat accident was recorded at 52 degrees.

“That's pretty cold,” Reynolds said.
