Helicopter, officers catch armed man
A state police helicopter and a team of Butler County officers apprehended an armed man who fled the scene of a shooting in Rochester, Beaver County.
Around 7 p.m. Saturday, emergency dispatchers sent Zelienople and Jackson Township police to investigate a possible intoxicated driver on State Route 68, according to a Jackson Township police news release. The driver was headed east from Beaver County to Zelienople and being tracked using a GPS in his car.
The man had allegedly fired several rounds from a handgun at another person in Rochester, Beaver County. The police aiming to intercept him in Butler County considered him armed, dangerous and possibly suicidal.
The man parked his vehicle at the Speedway store at 135 Lindsay Drive in Jackson Township. Officers arrived and surrounded his vehicle.
From there, the chase picked up pace. With police outside near his vehicle, the man fled the store into the nearby woods. A K-9 unit tracked him to a general area, and a Pennsylvania State Police Aviation Unit was called in to further locate him.
The police helicopter swept the scene with thermal and night-vision imaging. It worked — he was spotted and officers on the ground were able to set up a perimeter around his location.
Working in sync with the helicopter, Butler County's Emergency Services Unit arrested the man.
Police are not yet identifying the suspect, but Jackson Township Police report that he is facing multiple charges, including a felony charge of aggravated assault.
He was handed off to the Rochester Police Department, who now hold him in custody.
