‘American Rust’ not renewed
CRANBERRY TWP — “American Rust,” a television series on Showtime shot partly in Butler County, will not be renewed for a second season, the network said Tuesday.
A spokesperson for Showtime said in an emailed statement Tuesday that the nine-episode first season of “American Rust,” which aired from September through November and which was shot partly in Middlesex Township and Zelienople, will be its last.
“We can confirm that ‘American Rust’ will not be moving forward with a second season,” the statement read. “We would like to thank our partners at Boat Rocker, our talented showrunner Dan Futterman and the rest of the wonderful writers, and our amazing cast led by Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney.”
The show was based on a 2009 novel of the same name by Phillip Meyer, which was set in the fictional town of Buell, Fayette County. It followed the story of Buell’s “complicated and compromised” police chief, played by Jeff Daniels, in “a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town full of good people making bad choices,” according to Showtime.
On two separate occasions, scenes were filmed in Butler County. In July, film crews visited Jackson Township, Harmony and Zelienople to shoot scenes that included the depiction of a South High Street home’s exterior.
Later in July, crews filmed for three days in Middlesex Township at a private home near Sandy Hill and Leslie roads.
