Glenn Maharg Christy of Chapin Road, New Castle, formerly of Butler County, passed away at 1:07 a.m. Monday at Jameson Hospital, New Castle, after an illness.

He was born on the Christy family farm, established before 1865, near North Washington in Parker Township, May 3, 1923. He was a son of the late Claude Franklin Christy and Sara Mae Maharg Christy.

He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of New Castle and was a graduate of the Karns City High School Class of 1942. While in high school, he played all high school sports, played the french horn in the band, starred in the high school senior play and was president of his graduating class.

Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the 155th Air Wing during World War II in the South Pacific, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He was a truck driver and was a member of the teamsters' union. He also was an oil and gas producer in Butler County and owned the former Central Western Pennsylvania Coal Co., mining in northern Butler County.

He married the former Mary Elizabeth Robertson Nov. 21, 1946, in Butler. She survives along with four daughters, Patricia Lee Christy of New Castle, Sara Elizabeth Barna of South Park, Kathleen Christy and her husband, the Rev. Thomas Gilliland, of Maryville, Tenn., and Cecelia Mary Christy and Mark Riccardi of Pittsburgh; five sons, Glenn Christy and his wife, Nancy, of St. Louis, Mo., Stephen Gerald Christy and his wife, Margo, of Ellport, Matthew Robertson Christy of New Castle, Mark Timothy Christy of Latham, N.Y., and Shaun Claude Christy and his wife, Pamela, of New Castle; 15 grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews; a brother, Franklin Claude Christy and his wife, Ruth, of Warren; and a sister, Louie Weldon of Atlantic Beach, Fla.

Preceding him in death along with his father in 1977 and his mother in 1971 are one great-grandson, Tyler Christy on Jan. 11, 2006; one brother, William Samuel Christy; and two sisters, Jenny Rose Hayes in 1989 and Frances Cline on Sept. 28, 2004.

<B>CHRISTY</B> — Funeral services for Glenn Maharg Christy, who died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the <B>Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home</B>, Petrolia, with the Rev. Dennis Blauser, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church of New Castle and the Rev. Thomas Gilliland, pastor of the Clover Hill Presbyterian Church, Maryville, Tenn., officiating. Interment will be in North Washington Union Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515.
