Pennsylvania college athletes may soon have the opportunity to get paid.

The “Fair Pay to Play Act” was announced Monday afternoon by state Reps. Dan Miller, D-42nd, and Ed Gainey, D-24th, who are both from Allegheny County.

“Athletes are forced to give up their rights and economic freedom, while the colleges make hundreds of millions of dollars off of their talent and likeness,” Miller said in a press release. “This bill would help to balance the scales by allowing them to sign endorsements, earn compensation and hire agents to represent their interests in exchange for the work they do, and the benefit provided to the college.”

Miller said in the release that the bill would mirror a California bill that was signed Monday by California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The bill in California allows college athletes to profit from the use of their name, image and likeness starting in 2023.

No specific date has been given for when the Pennsylvania legislation will be introduced.
