BUFFALO TWP — Freeport High School students were introduced recently to The Challenge Program during a school assembly that included information about career-readiness and local career opportunities.

Five juniors and five seniors received awards for the work they accomplished during the 2016-17 school year in five categories.

The recipients were Luke Kennedy for academic improvement, Brett Jones for academic excellence, Michaela Mattivi for STEM, Isabella Parks for academic excellence, Albert Gamble for academic improvement, Hannah Sweeny for community service, Kaitlyn Nicholas for attendance, Cameron Findlay for community service, John Zurisko for STEM and Shannon Mitchell for attendance.

Quality Life Services Sarver sponsored the awards and was the business partner for the school in 2016-17. It also is the 2017-2018 sponsor.

INDIANA, Pa. — Brittany Schaeffer, of Slippery Rock, a psychology and child development and family relations major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, was selected for the Robert and Ruth O’Connor Scholarship at IUP.

Schaeffer, daughter of Tammy Hannan and Scott Hannan, was named a Dean’s Scholar at IUP Punxsutawney and a Punxsutawney Person of Purpose. She is a member of the Residence Hall Council and the Residence Hall Association.

She is a 2013 graduate of Slippery Rock High School.

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley High School students earned several awards at the University of Pittsburgh Model United Nations Conference.

The awards were first place for outstanding overall large delegation (team), first place for outstanding overall small delegation (team), first place outstanding special political council (Arushi Subba and Rishin Sharma), first place for outstanding International Atomic Energy Agency (Brian Vogel), second place for excellent commission status of women (Tara Bhatia and Will Adams) and third place excellent position paper (Mariah Harvin).

For the large delegation of Egypt, the students were Jake Geil, Max Moore, Hiruni Herat, Erika Moeller, Arushi Subba, Rishin Sharma, Matt Mularski, Nicole Buchek, Tara Bhatia, Will Adams, Brian Vogel, Kat Yellin and Anna Richter.

For the small delegation of Argentina, the students were Brad Hartman, Mariah Harvin, Bryce Behr, Martina Beggy and Alyssa Tollerton.

The competition included more than 200 area students who represented 80 countries.

Both teams were coached by senior high school gifted support teacher Brieana Nassan.
