COMING ATTRACTIONS

The Barn Owl Reintroduction Program and Moraine Preservation Fund will be the subject of the Outdoor Discovery program at 7 p.m. July 1 at Alameda Park's Carousel Shelter.

Heather Jerry from the preservation fund will discuss why barn owls are beneficial to the environment and why the reintroduction is important. A barn owl may be presented.

The free event is hosted by the Butler County Parks and Recreation Department.

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform free concerts this summer.The orchestra will celebrate Independence Day with a concert at 8 p.m. July 4 in Point State Park. Resident conductor Louis Richman will lead the orchestra. Selections will include "The Star-Spangled Banner," "1812 Overture" and "Stars and Stripes Forever." Fireworks will follow.Musical selections from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" will fill the air at 8 p.m. Aug. 6 in South Park. Other concert pieces will include Tchaikovsky's "March" from "The Nutcracker" and Gershwin's "An American in Paris." Assistant conductor Daniel Meyer will lead the orchestra, and violinist Jeremy Black will be featured.Richman will again conduct the final concert of the series at 8:15 p.m. Aug. 7 at Hartwood Acres, Middle Road, Allison Park. CRANBERRY TWP - Comtra Theatre continues to offer musicals and plays throughout the summer.Now playing is "The Last Five Years," a new musical by Jason Robert Brown. It will be staged Friday through July 3 at the theater on Route 19, directly across from West View Savings Bank, about two miles north of the turnpike.Next will be "The Secret Garden" from July 9 to 24. This musical is a Pulitzer Prize-winning adaptation of the classic children's book.Then Comtra will present "Snow White" at 7 p.m. July 14, 18 and 21, and at 12:30 p.m. July 17 and 24. Cost is $5 per person for this show only.To finish off the summer, "Grease" is planned for July 30 to Aug. 14, and the "Wizard of Oz" will carry past Labor Day, from Aug. 20 to Sept. 4.The fall season will bring the farce "Drop Dead" from Sept. 10 to 25, the musical "My Fair Lady" Oct. 1 to 16, the musical "Jekyll and Hyde" Oct. 22 to Nov. 6, and "The Sound of Music" Dec. 3 to 18.The curtain regularly goes up at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, unless otherwise noted.Tickets cost $12 for musicals and $10 for plays.Call 724-773-9896 for reservations or more information.
