Dr. Robert Palmer 'Bob' Cleeland
Robert Palmer “Bob” Cleeland, O.D., 90, of Butler passed away at 4 a.m. Monday at his home.
He was born Aug. 24, 1922, in Butler to the late Carl L. Cleeland and Helen Palmer Cleeland.
Dr. Cleeland received his doctorate of optometry from Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He followed in his father's and grandfather's practice in Cleeland Dr's of Optometry on Main Street, Butler, which was started by his grandfather in 1881.
Dr. Cleeland was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving on Guam during World War II.
He was a member of the Shriners, Kiwanis, Butler Little Theater and Pittsburgh Playhouse, and he was a lifetime member of the Butler Country Club. Dr. Cleeland enjoyed golfing, traveling and fishing. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown.
Dr. Cleeland is survived by his wife, Arlene (Walters) Cleeland, who he married Nov. 12, 1966; three daughters, Deeann Stephens and her husband, Donald, of Georgia, Cathy Cleeland Wolff and her husband, Otto, of Fort Mitchell, Ky., and Kyle Barbara Cleeland Porter of Loveland, Ohio, and also of Venice Fla.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Cleeland Tooke of Chambersburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
CLEELAND — Friends of Dr. Robert Palmer “Bob” Cleeland who passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dan Muttart, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, and the Rev. Dr. Richard A. Morledge officiating.
