93-year-old man killed crossing road
FORWARD TWP — A 93-year-old man was killed late Saturday afternoon when a car hit him as he used a walker to cross Mars Evans City Road, authorities said.
Donald Jennings was going to get his mail across the road from his home just south of Glenwood Avenue when he was struck about 5:30 p.m.
“I was in my driveway, and I heard what sounded like an explosion to me,” said neighbor Genevieve Westerman, who lives close by. “I thought maybe a tire had blown out.”
Moments later, a passing motorist told Westerman that someone had been hit by a car.
Jennings died at the scene, said Butler County Coroner William Young III.
Rescue crews found the victim’s walker, which had been tossed into the air and landed on the side of the road, said Chief Mark Adomaitis of the Evans City Volunteer Fire Department.
State police said Mary Jones, 51, of Mars was southbound on Mars Evans City Road when Jennings walked in front of her 2005 Honda Accord.
She told police she did not see Jennings because it was dark outside. Jones was not injured. No charges have been filed.
