Joseph Dittmer

Dr. Joseph J. Dittmer, 67, of Northfield, Ohio, passed away Tuesday at VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler.

Born on April 21, 1947, in Herman, he was the son on the late Joseph R. and Mary E. Raith Dittmer.

He attended the St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic School in Herman for grades 1 through 8. He then attended St. Fidelis Seminary from 1961 to 1965.

He was employed by Northcoast Behavioral Hospital as an assistant psychology director for the past 43 years.

He graduated from Slippery Rock University in 1969, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts. In 1972 and 1982 he earn his two master’s degrees in psychology from various universities. In 1982, he earned his doctorate in psychology from Kent State University in Ohio.

In 1983, he was a co-founder of the Cleveland Institute for Adlerian Studies. From 1989 to 1991, he was president of the Biofeedback Society of Ohio, and from 1989 to 1990, he was the president of the Psychology Society of Western Reserve. From 1988 to 1990, he was president of the Ohio State Association of Psychologists.

He was a member of the St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church in Northfield, Ohio, and a member of the St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Herman.

Surviving are his brothers and sisters, James F. (Sharyn) Dittmer of Herman, Wess Dittmer of Cabot, Frank (Kathy) Dittmer of Butler, Robert (Joann) Dittmer of Butler, Henry (Patty) Dittmer of Butler, Lynda (Robert) Shuler of Butler and Shirley (Don) Saeler of Fenelton, and his numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Horner Dittmer, who passed away in December 2009, and his brother, Danny Dittmer.

Dittmer— The friends of Dr. Joseph J. Dittmer, who passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at the St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Herman.
