Maurice L. “Cubby” Fogel

Maurice L. “Cubby” Fogel, 82, of Butler, peacefully passed away at noon Sunday at Good Samaritan Inpatient Hospice at Concordia in Cabot following an extended illness. 

Cubby was born Feb. 18, 1932, in Butler, the son of the late Marcel and Mildred Hilliard Fogel.

A graduate of Butler High School Class of 1950, Cubby enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, serving on the minesweeper USS Chief from 1951 to 1955. 

Following military duty, he majored in accounting and economics at Grove City College, earning a bachelor's degree in 1960. Cubby was greatly influenced by the economic philosophy of the late Dr. Hans Sennholz.

After graduation, Cubby served for 36 years with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, beginning his career as a negotiator and retiring in 1997 after a successful career as a central office reviewing appraiser in Harrisburg.

To those who knew him best, Cubby was a staunch conservative with a fiercely competitive spirit, a quick wit and an unshakable belief in God, country and family. Cubby was a loving and steadfast husband, father and grandfather. 

He was a naturally gifted athlete and a formidable opponent, whether playing a game of golf, cards or boccie. He played football for the Butler Cubs and Grove City College and he also played in Natili's Golf League for many years. In retirement he also became a certified scuba diver. He traveled extensively, visiting Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and South America.

Cubby was a lifelong member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Butler.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 57 years, Malphine Andreassi Fogel. They married June 8, 1957, in St. Patrick Church, Bradys Bend. He is also survived by his two daughters, Mary Elise “Lisa” Hyland and her husband, Dr. Robert Hyland Jr., of Pittsburgh, and Anne Fogel Burchenal and her husband, Cooper Burchenal, of Missoula, Mont.; his son, Marc H. Fogel and his wife, Jane Miller Fogel, of Moscow, Russia; and two sisters, Jane Truby of Butler and Marsha Rublewski of Charlotte, N.C.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Logan Hyland, Ellen Keelan and her husband, Rob, and Kelly Hyland, all of Pittsburgh, Natalie Hyland of Christchurch, New Zealand, Ethan and Sam Fogel of Moscow, Russia, and Cy, Copeland and Celeste Burchenal, all of Missoula, Mont.

In addition to his parents, Cubby was preceded in death by his sister, Janet Baldacci, and his brother, Charles Fogel.

Fogel— Friends of Maurice L. “Cubby” Fogel, who passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Martin Funeral Home, 429 Center Ave., Butler.The Bereavement Group of St. Michael's Parish will meet at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home to conduct a scriptural wake service.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Ave., Butler. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bradys Bend.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 146 N.
