Of the 499 bridges in Butler County, 355 are under the jurisdiction of the state Department of Transportation.

Of those 355 bridges, 127 are in good condition, 191 are in fair condition and 37 are in poor condition, according to PennDOT reports.

The state bridges on the main highways in the county are in good shape, according to PennDOT information.

“PennDOT is responsible for the inspection of our state-owned bridges,” said Christina Gibbs, PennDOT District 10 spokeswoman. “The bridges are inspected on varying timelines according to state and federal regulations. Maintenance and improvement of bridges is done through various bridge preservation activities, including painting, deck joint repair or replacement, rigid deck overlays, etc.”

Notable bridges determined to be in poor condition throughout the county are:

* The almost 1,500-foot bridge on Route 528 over Lake Arthur that was built in 1969. The bridge carries 1,492 vehicles per day.

* An 868-foot bridge in Butler and Summit townships at Karns Crossing that was built in 1937. The bridge carries 9,829 vehicles per day.

* A 262-foot bridge in Cranberry Township that carries Rowan Road over Interstate 79 that was built in 1970.
