Charles M. Slater

Charles M. Slater of Grove City, formerly of Stoneboro, passed away at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday in Grove Manor Nursing Home following a lengthy illness. He was 91.

Known by his friends as “Chuck” and his family as “Mynheer,” he was born in New Vernon Township, Mercer County, on July 26, 1926, to Asa James and Helen (Knapp) Slater.

He married Virginia Eakin on June 18, 1948. She preceded him in death on May 18, 2003. He later married Brenda Welton on Dec. 9, 2003. She survives at home.

Chuck was raised on his family farm in New Vernon Township and attended Sandy Lake High School.

Following school. he served in World War II with the U.S. Navy, Armed Guard, Merchant Marines.

He retired from Sunbeam Coal where he worked for over 40 years. Later he worked at Adessa in Jackson Center.

He enjoyed traveling and square dancing.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Shirley McGinnis and her husband, Terry, of Ashland, Ohio; a stepson, Andrew Moore of Austintown, Ohio; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Flossie Ryder of New Vernon Township, and Gwendolyn “Honey” Moore and her husband, Robert of Arkansas; four brothers, Carl Slater and his wife, Ruth, of Nevada, Ronnie Slater and his wife, Roberta of Hadley, Bruce Slater and his wife, Lorna, of Grove City, and John Slater of Toronto, Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a son, C. Michael Slater; and two infant children; two sisters, Edys Heckman and Olive Papay; and a brother, Glenn Slater.

SLATER — The family of Charles M. Slater, who died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Cunningham Funeral Home, 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City.A memorial service will be held later in the spring with burial following in Millbank Cemetery in Fredonia.
