COVID UPDATE 4/19/21: New cases continue as vaccinations increase

More than 2.7 million people in Pennsylvania have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but the number of new cases of coronavirus remains high.

The seven-day average of people getting vaccinated per day is 97,100, and a total of 7,141,842 doses have been administered, including 4,638,111 first and single doses and 2,503,731 second doses, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Those numbers include the 17,517 people in the county who are partially vaccinated and the 56,079 people who are fully vaccinated.

Statewide, 5,114 new cases from Saturday, 3,761 from Sunday and 1,914 from Monday raised the total to 1,109,291 since the beginning of the pandemic. In the county, 104 new cases increased the total to 10,360.

Butler Memorial Hospital is treating 24 patients with COVID-19, including two in the intensive care unit.

There are 2,638 people hospitalized across the state, including 551 in intensive care. The 14-day average number of people hospitalized per day is about 3,600 lower than it was when the virus peaked in December 2020 and lower than it was at the height of the spring peak in May 2020, but is increasing, according to the department. About 27,211 of the total cases in the state are among health care workers.

In licensed nursing and personal care homes, 70,168 residents and 14,594 employees have COVID-19. Of the total deaths in the state, 13,028 have been residents of nursing or personal care facilities.

The 29 new deaths over the weekend brings the state total 25,690 and two new deaths in the county brings the total to 400.

Butler Health System said all residents ages 16 and older can now sign up for vaccinations, and should do so because the coronavirus continues to spread in the community. Appointments can be scheduled at www.butlerhealthsystem.org.
