Lena M. Atwell

Lena M. Atwell, 90, formerly of Butler, died at 2:52 a.m. Tuesday at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life Care Center, Wilmington, N.C.

Born in Callensburg, April 18, 1913, she was the daughter of George C. and Sadie Elnora Switzer Haldeman.

She was a graduate of Butler High School and retired as a self-employed grocer. She made quilts all her life and was active with a quilting society in Florida.

Mrs. Atwell was a member of the Hill United Presbyterian Church in Butler and the Chapel by the Sea of Fort Myers, Fla.

She is survived by a son, Gary Atwell of Wilmington; three sisters, Virginia Powell of Canton, Ohio, Betty Richardson of Cape Coral, Fla., and Patricia Ray of Alliance, Ohio. Also surviving are five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Her husband, Kenneth Eakin Atwell, died June 14, 1997. A son and a brother also preceded her in death.

ATWELL - Friends of Lena M. Atwell, who died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, will be received from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St. Services will follow at noon Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. John Porter of Hill United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be at East Unity United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Eau Claire.Memorial donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Life Care Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.Information also is available at www.thompson-miller.com.
